The time to find that balance between a child's talents and his or
her interests is when he is young. So the key is to expose children
to as many different programs as they show an interest in (limited
of course, by available time and cost!)
Speaking from experience, my own children tried many different types of athletics
before they were able to narrow it down to a few. And even now - when they are
in their teens - they ask me why I never let them try such and such.
Every busy parent knows how unfair that statement is!
Some of the programs that my kids tried and loved are Mickey Kydes Soccer
through the Westport Soccer Association, dance at the Westport Academy of
Dance, several different offerings at the Westport YMCA, Little League Baseball,
Water Rat Swimming, and the list goes on.
