Getting a head start on Westport Summer Camp is a good idea.

There is no end of options when it comes to summer fun in this town - that is the good news. But the coin always has another side, and in this case - despite the many offerings, the programs typically fill up quickly.

Westport Summer Camp

Because Westport Connecticut is located on the shores of Long Island Sound, many of the activities revolve around the beaches and the water.

The town itself - through it's Parks and Recreation department - offers Camp Compo, a summer day camp for kids in grades 5 to 8 called the Recing Crew, swim lessons, golf lessons at Longshore, and a variety of other programs to young ones. There is also the infamous Longshore Sailing School that provides classes for a wide range of ages.

While sun and fun go hand in hand, some people prefer a little shade during the dog days, when the mercury rises. The Continuing Education department comes through in this regard - offering classes in arts, theater, sports, academics, and more.

There are many private programs available in the area as well.

Given all the choices - good research is a must. The easiest place to start is with the kids themselves. Sometimes my kids surprise me by asking to participate in an activity that I never would have imagined they were interested in. Finding an applicable Westport summer camp is a perfect way for them to try something new without making a yearlong commitment.

My kids discovered some new things about themselves in this manner. My oldest tried a Magic class one summer. To this day he will pull out his bag of tricks and entertain the family from time to time.

My daughter took part in the Hafaday program at the YMCA and overcame a fear of the water.

The opposite also holds true. Two of my kids tried an outdoorsy day camp one year. While they enjoyed it while they were there - they definitely were opposed to attending the following season. They discovered that this type of adventure was not their cup of tea.

No matter what their interests, one thing is for certain - Westport Connecticut has something for everyone.
